Symptoms

Many symptoms may be present with this condition. You may feel like there's always something foreign in your eyes. Your eyes might itch, or you may have burning or stinging. Your eyes may start to water, and many patients find that they are more sensitive to light. Your eyes, or your eyelids, may be swollen or turn red. You may have tears that are foamy or have little bubbles. Blepharitis can lead to patients having dry eyes. It can also result in mucus coming from your eyes and causing crusty eyelids in the morning. Some more serious symptoms may develop in patients. These include blurred vision, losing the eyelashes, and having corneas that get swollen. It's also possible for the eyelashes to start growing in an incorrect direction.

Blepharitis Basics

This condition causes problems with the eyelids that can include itchy, irritated, swollen, and red eyes. Many people wake up to crusty flakes in their eyelashes and wonder what's wrong with their eyes. It can be frustrating and uncomfortable, and you need to get regular eye exams to get a diagnosis from an optometrist. It's often caused by the eyelids having too many bacteria on them. The oil glands located inside the eyelids may also be irritated or clogged up. The standard treatment is often to learn how to clean your eyelids properly every day to help relieve the problem.
